(AP) ? Among the many questions that arose during Drew Peterson's murder trial, one of the least weighty but most perplexing was ? what on earth were jurors trying to say by meticulously coordinating their clothes each day?

They wore all yellow, then all green, blue and black. They wore alternating red, white and blue once in a hint of the American flag. The display that caused the biggest stir was when all 16 wore team jerseys ? mostly supporting the Chicago Bears and White Sox, although there was one for the Green Bay Packers.

Some of the 12 jurors and four alternates cleared up the mystery Friday, a day after the jury convicted the 58-year-old former Illinois police officer of first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio: They say they weren't trying to say anything.

"It was a way to pass the time," explained Patricia Timke, an alternate juror, noting the group couldn't talk about evidence during the five weeks of testimony. "We had long discussions on colors to wear each day. It took time to work out."

"There was no message," agreed juror Teresa Mathews, who spoke at a news conference with several jurors later in the day.

Mathews noted lawyers' constant objections in the complex case, which forced jurors to get up and leave the courtroom more than a dozen times a day while the attorneys argued over the admissibility of evidence.

"We probably spent more time in the jury room than the courtroom," the 49-year-old said.

Asked why they all agreed to the sartorial stunts, jury foreman Eduardo Saldana, 22, answered flatly, "We were bored."

The practice, which most legal experts said they had never seen or heard of before, raised many eyebrows and drew criticism from some who said it conveyed a lack of seriousness ? especially during a murder trial.

Timke, 68, insisted such criticism was unfair.

"We took everything extremely seriously," she said.

Jurors sat through often gruesome evidence, included grisly photos of Savio, who was found dead in her bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident, and Peterson was charged only charged after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007. He now faces a prison sentence of up to 60 years.

Jurors said they were not oblivious to courtroom decorum, either. They noted they asked presiding Judge Edward Burmila if he would object to them wearing sports jersey the one day.

"We asked permission because we didn't want to disrespect the court and he said fine ? and he laughed," Timke said.

The judge also made a joke once they filed in with jerseys on.

Burmila ? a White Sox fan ? cheerfully noted an absence of jerseys supporting the team's cross-town rivals, the Cubs. Jurors were obviously intelligent, he told the courtroom, because "nobody has any Cubs clothes on."

Defense attorney Steve Greenberg even worked the jerseys into his questioning of a witness, Savio's friend Mary Pontarelli. Glancing at the jury box, Greenberg asked what jersey she'd prefer.

"Sox," she responded without missing a beat.

"Instant credibility!" Greenberg boomed, thrusting his finger into the air.

The judge struck the attorney's exclamation from the record, though he quipped he wouldn't strike the witness's response.

Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) early in life results in high levels of anxiety; Soy mitigates effects, study shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? New research led by researchers at North Carolina State University shows that exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) early in life results in high levels of anxiety by causing significant gene expression changes in a specific region of the brain called the amygdala. The researchers also found that a soy-rich diet can mitigate these effects.

"We knew that BPA could cause anxiety in a variety of species, and wanted to begin to understand why and how that happens," says Dr. Heather Patisaul, an associate professor of biology at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the work. BPA is a chemical used in a wide variety of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, and is used in consumer products such as some food containers.

In the study, rats were exposed to low doses of BPA during gestation, lactation (nursing) and through puberty. One group of animals was fed only soy; one group was fed a soy-free diet; one group was fed only soy and exposed to BPA; and one group was fed no soy and exposed to BPA. Blood tests showed that the animals exposed to BPA had BPA levels well within the range found in humans. Similarly, blood tests of animals fed soy showed levels of genistein, an estrogen-like chemical found in soy, were at levels within the human range for vegetarians and others who regularly consume soy foods.

Among adolescent rats on the soy-free diet, both males and females that had been exposed to BPA exhibited significantly higher levels of anxiety. The researchers also found, for the first time, gene changes within the brain associated with this elevated anxiety.

Specifically, the study reveals that gene expression changes in the amygdala, a brain region known to play a role in mediating responses to fear and stress, are associated with the behavioral changes. Two of the affected genes were estrogen receptor beta and the melanocortin receptor 4. Both are required for oxytocin release, thus changes in oxytocin/vasopressin signaling pathways may underpin the behavioral changes. Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter that has been linked to social behavior.

However, the researchers also found that adolescent rats on the soy-rich diet did not exhibit anxiety -- suggesting that the soy-rich diet may mitigate the effects of BPA. But a soy-rich diet raises questions of its own.

"Soy contains phytoestrogens that can also affect the endocrine system, which regulates hormones," Patisaul says. "It is not clear whether these phytoestrogens are what mitigate the effect of BPA, or if it is something else entirely. That's a question we're hoping to address in future research."

The paper, "Anxiogenic effects of developmental Bisphenol A exposure 1 are associated with gene expression changes in the juvenile rat amygdala and mitigated by soy," was published Sept. 5 in the journal PLoS ONE. The paper was co-authored by Patisaul; NC State Ph.D. student Alana Sullivan; NC State master's student Meghan Radford; former NC State student Dr. Heather Adewale; Deena Walker and Dr. Andrea Gore of the University of Texas at Austin; and Bozena Winnik, Janis Coughlin and Dr. Brian Buckley of Rutgers University. The research was funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Jim Seimas, Airing it Out: Aptos' Aaron Glaum sees baseball season Ripper-ed away

Click photo to enlarge

Professional baseball player Aaron Glaum, an Aptos High and Carbillo College alum. (Contibuted)

It's tough to make a living as a minor-league baseball player. The pay is low and the travel seems constant.

Aptos native Aaron Glaum learned this first-hand in his rookie season with the Frontier League's London Rippers, a first-year pro team in Canada.

But Glaum -- a lifelong player and a standout shortstop at Florida's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2010-11 -- could do nothing to prepare himself for the continuous curve balls life delivered him this year.

Glaum, 23, made $600 a month the past season, and received $20 on game days for food and free housing. Still, his budget was tight.

"On the road, it was OK, but when we were in Canada, everything's more expensive there," said Glaum, a 5-foot-7, 170-pound middle infielder and outfielder for the Rippers. "They don't even have a dollar menu. It's like a dollar and 33 cents."

Then, what little he had was Ripper-ed away.

On July 24, Glaum and teammates were only left with the shirts on their backs. Or, in this case, jerseys. Really.

The Rippers, who played their inaugural game May 18, ceased operations.

At midnight on that ill-fated day, Glaum went from starter to free agent -- jobless.

Frontier League commissioner Bill Lee -- not the "Spaceman" -- immediately stepped in with an option for the players, though. After the top free agents were gobbled up, Lee said the decimated Rippers could pick up outcasts from other teams and finish the season. They

would do so without a home field.

The team would reside in hotels near the Lake Erie Crushers in Ohio and go by the name Road Warriors. Really, they would live on a charter bus.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.

The unfoldings meant the Road Warriors had little to no fan base. They barely had that as a losing team in Canada, anyway.

From the moment of the Rippers' inception, controversy began pouring in.

Some people publicly detested the team's name and logo, which bore a resemblance to Jack the Ripper, the infamous late-19th century serial killer from London, England.

And then a trio of players -- two Dominicans and one Taiwanese -- couldn't get into Canada. They joined the Rippers only for road games.

Slowly, the losses began to mount.

But the hardest thing to swallow?

The Rippers -- who displaced the Intercounty Baseball League's London Majors as the primary tenant at Labatt Park -- were unable to obtain a liquor license.

No beer? No fans.

No fans? No profit.

I can hear the unpaid public address announcer now: "This team is going, going ... gone!"

The Rippers, unable to pay bills, were locked out of their retail outlet downtown. Then they closed shop at Labatt Park.

"We had 60 to 80 people," Glaum said of the average home crowd, likening it to playing at Aptos High. "Except in high school, the stands aren't as big. Everyone was crammed together. [In Canada,] it was one or two people here or there."

If he felt like a big-leaguer, he must have felt like a Montreal Expo.

Err, make that the A's, Glaum said.

"Some of the guys on the team would make those jokes, that we were the Oakland A's of the Frontier League," Glaum said. "Moneyball.' It felt like that. We got the bare minimum of everything."

That trend continued after the Rippers became the Road Warriors.

"I think some fans felt bad for us," Glaum said. "It's tough to go into all those parks and have no one there for us. We had no home-field advantage -- ever. And we were never the home team, which means we never got the last at-bat. That's tough to continually try to win like that."

The Road Warriors finished their season Sunday, beating host Traverse City 6-1 for a rare win.

The Warriors finished with a 9-27 record -- worst in the Frontier League's East Division. [The Rippers' dismal record was expunged from the league standings when it folded.]

Monday, Glaum was back in Pittsburgh, where he lives with his girlfriend. Finally, he exhaled.

"It was fun, but it was a stressful year," Glaum said. "The worst possible things that can happen kind of happened. It was so hard to get fired up every day when one thing after another went wrong."

Glaum finished with a .205 batting average in 87 total games. He knows he's capable of better.

Glaum envisions brighter days, but with a new team. He loves the sport too much to quit now, not like this.

Still, he said: "I wouldn't trade any of that to keep playing."

Tuesday, Glaum was an ex-pro and again on the road. He had an interview at Dick's Sporting Goods.

"I need to get a job, too," he said.

He's not living the dream yet. But he's still chasing it.

?John from Cincinnati? ? Screenwriting from Iowa

?What?s so wonderful about surfing is that it not only connects you with the ocean but also a certain energy in nature. When you?re surfing, it?s like you really are tapping into that source.?
Novelist/screenwriter Kem Nunn

?Let me hasten to say I?m not comparing myself to St. Paul. But I know what it is to do what you never dreamed of doing, what you never thought you?d be capable of doing. The utter mystification that you experience. ?How did I get here? How did this happen???
Four-time Primetime Emmy winning writer David Milch
The Writer?s Voice

HBO?s John from Cincinnati (2007) was created by David Milch and Kem Nunn and used the sport of surfing as an integral backdrop in a way that was as refreshing as it was obscure. You didn?t always don?t what you were watching, but you knew you were watching something different. There was supernatural levitation and artificial medication, a family with three generations of active surfers, and Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business) as a late forties pretty attractive grandma, all set in the border town of Imperial Beach, California.

The show only lasted one season. Perhaps due to the fact that shows that are existential and mystical tend to have a wee bit harder time finding an audience than, say, the average reality show. Still the final episode had 3 million viewers.

?Perhaps the most important aspect of writing truly great television (and naturally something I?ve always been good at) is coming up with dialog that just barely resembles what each character is trying to say. When people have to work to understand what the hell is going on, they presume (correctly!) that they must be watching fine art.?
David Milch
The David Milch School of Screenwriting
(That link even has an example from John from Cincinnati to explain what he means.)

Milch did his undergraduate work in English at Yale, earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers? Workshop at the University of Iowa before becoming an Emmy-winning writer on the TV shows?Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue.?He?s perhaps most well-known for creating the HBO show Deadwood. In 2006 he was award the Outstanding Television Writers Award at the Austin Film Festival.

?My? understanding of the way the mechanism of storytelling works is ?whether or not the audience is conscious of the process, apart from the audience awareness that there is a process, any story is constantly appending specific values to the meanings of words, and of the actions of characters.?
David Milch
Variety article??John from Cincinnati?: David Milch Speaks

John from Cincinnati?s?co-creator,?Nunn has been called??America?s most accomplished surfer novelist.? He graduated with an MFA from the writing program at UC Irvine, and his first novel Tapping the Source was nominated for an American Book Award, ?later followed by The?Dogs of Winter, Tijuana Straits which he calls his??surf trilogy.? On the back cover of Tapping the Source writer Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty) wrote,?Ken Numm is one of a rare breed, a novelist who knows how to plot and tell a story. There is amazing energy here.?

Like it or not, you have to applaud HBO for allowing John from Cincinnati to step up to the plate.

Pete from Cincinnati

Speaking of stepping up to the plate, when I think if Cincinnati one of the first names that comes to mind is Pete Rose who used to play baseball for the Cincinnati Reds. Through he holds the record for most hits in major league baseball he?s barred from MLB and the Baseball Hall of Fame?for gambling on baseball. Since I grew up in the ?70s putting together a scrapbook on The Big Red Machine and wanting to be Pete Rose I?ve followed his life story with great interest. (Even went to a baseball camp he did one day at Tinker Field in Orlando.) The other day I came across this short piece on Rose produced by ESPN that I found as an engaging chapter in Rose?s life that I was unfamiliar with.

Rob from Dayton

How does Rob Lowe pop up on this post? Simple, he also grew up in the 70s following the Cincinnati Reds and is a surfer. He started acting as youth while living in Dayton, Ohio (about an hour?s drive from Cincinnati), before moving to Malibu, CA during his high school years on his way to being an actor in The Outsiders,?Wayne?s World,?The West Wing, and currently?Parks and Recreation.

I met Lowe?at a John Mellencamp concert at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. It was 1984 or ?85 I believe and he was sitting right in front of me so I was like, ?Hey dude, I was born in Dayton.? You can imagine how impressed he was by that revelation, but he was gracious. (Later learned that Lowe went to Oakwood Junior High just a couple of blocks from where my grandmother lived on Harman Avenue in the Dayton/Oakwood area.) Dayton has a well establish history in theater and I remember going to?Marion?s Pizza?as a kid and seeing walls full of black and white photos of famous/semi-famous/used to be famous actors who had performed in Dayton.

As these posts on surfing have been kicking around my brain for the last week I started to write down ideas for a story that takes place on the East Coast of Florida. Right now it?s just 3X5 index cards of notes of personal experiences, people and places/surf spots between Amelia Island and Sebastian Inlet. And on one of my note cards I have written ?Rob Lowe-Surfer.? Writing actor bait? Why not? Tell me that a very in shape Rob Lowe wouldn?t want to be in a movie that featured him as a surfer if the script was good.

Same reason the athletic?Kevin Costner?did three baseball movies (Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, For the Love of the Game), one golf movie (Tin Cup), and one bike racing movie?(American Flyers). So there?s my stake in the ground?we?ll see where it leads.

Can?t you see the movie poster? ?Kelly Slater, C.J. Hobgood,?Katrina Petroni?and Rob Lowe?

I have one more post to write following this surfer thread and it will be about a man who was born, raised and died in Michigan yet was a key part of the modern-day surfing movement. Gotta love the outsiders.

In the meantime, in the spirit of Edward Burns seeking true honeymood situations for his film Newlyweds, if you have a surf anecdote you?d like to pass my way send it to: info@scottwsmith.com. It could be as simple as a sufer friend of mine San Diego way who had a shot on Facebook of his foot in a bucket of water with a caption about his 39th stingray sting. According to him, ?Coronado is the motherload for stringrays.? Don?t remember ever seeing that in a surf film. I?m not looking for story ideas, just that stingray kind of authenticity.

P.S. Nine or ten years ago I produced a TV program that featured?Katrina Petroni?when she was an up and coming surfer. I?ll see if I can find some photos from that shoot we did at her home in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

Thread: Steel Studs.....? - Family Woodworking

I'm building a very simple wall, it will have one door in it, I want to use steel studs, mainly because they are about the same price as 2x4s here, and they go up easy and quick, as well as straight, and because they do not burn! Really you should see the poor quality 2x4s we have been getting recently here, they are really bad, hockey stick like, and expensive.

Anyone with any experience framing a wall with steel studs?

NOT load bearing, just enclosing a space in our parking area to use as storage for my new business.

From what I understand you just put the channel top and bottom and then cut the studs to fit, and screw them in place, fairly simple no?

Double up on each side of the door and over the top of the door too?

I've never done steel studs, seen it done, worked around it while it was being done, but I've never done it.

Tips, or links etc would be great, I'l be showing some pics later when I have time to take some.

Cheers!

History of Video Games

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:03 AM PDT

Way back in 1961, a talented team of programmers led by Steve "Slug" Russell developed the world's first video game: Spacewar. A lot has changed since then, but the fundamentals of what makes a good video game are still the same now as they were back in the 1960s.

Ford Attempts to Gain Traction in the Hybrid Car Market - Junk Science

Taking advantage of unpredictable gas prices and a rising consumer interest in all things green, auto-maker Ford is finally making its way into sales of dedicated hybrid vehicles with its freshly announced 2013 C-Max line.

The hybrid auto niche has long been dominated by Toyota and its popular Prius, with major players lke Hyundai, Kia and General Motors working their way into top spots as well, making Ford a relative latecomer at risk of being overshadowed by the competition; while Ford has released hybrid versions of its existing models in years past, the C-Max compact crossover stands as its first dedicated hybrid line.

Venezuela, indigenous groups dispute whether Amazon massacre took place

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Venezuela and indigenous groups are disputing whether an alleged massacre of Amazon villagers took place after Venezuela's government said it found no evidence of an attack.

A group representing the Yanomami tribe last week said that Brazilian gold miners had crossed the border and attacked a village from a helicopter. It said the assault could have killed more than 70 people.

Though the attack allegedly happened in July, the tribe was only able to alert the government recently because of the distance and isolation of their native region along the long, dense jungle border with Brazil.

Venezuelan officials said over the weekend that flyovers of the area led them to believe that the allegations were false.

"We can tell the country that we have seen no evidence of death," said Nicia Maldonado, Venezuela's minister of government affairs, in televised comments.

Native rights groups and some local politicians criticized the government, saying it reached that conclusion prematurely.

The remoteness of the region - and the nomadic habits of the Yanomami tribe - make it unlikely officials could have reached the exact spot where the attack was reported to have taken place, they said. Even natives, they point out, take days to move among settlements in the region.

In a collective statement, 11 tribes and rights groups including the Yanomami said, "It cannot be said that there isn't evidence" and pressed the government to continue investigating.

Liborio Guarulla, an indigenous Venezuelan and governor of Amazonas, the southern state where the attack is said to have happened, accused the government of "mobilizing resources just to silence the matter."

To some officials, the allegations of an assault by foreign aggressors, wielding guns and explosives from a helicopter, is difficult to believe. Not only would assailants need resources, know-how and familiarity with terrain not easily accessed from above, they would need knowledge of the habits and whereabouts of the Yanomami, who live in small groups and change settlements frequently.

"It would be extremely hard to do," said General Rafael Zambrano, commander of the Venezuelan army unit responsible for the region. Zambrano in a telephone interview said a small patrol of troops continues to inspect the area just in case.

YANOMAMI REQUEST UNUSUAL

People familiar with the Yanomami said their request for an investigation is unusual because tribal tradition frowns on discussions of the dead.

"It's a measure of how serious the problem is that they are making these allegations," said Marcos Wesley de Oliveira, coordinator of a regional program for indigenous people at the Instituto Socioambiental, a Brazilian advocacy group.

The tribe's native land on both sides of the border in recent decades has come under increasing pressure from wildcat gold miners and other outsiders.

Brazil's government last week said it asked Venezuela for more information about the alleged attack and whether Brazilians were involved. On Monday, Brazil's foreign ministry said it hasn't yet received any request from Venezuela for help investigating.

If an attack occurred, it remains unclear how many victims there may have been.

In the document they presented to Venezuelan authorities, the tribe said that only three members of the village are known to still be alive.

Those three, the document said, had been hunting when they heard the sound of a helicopter, gunfire, and explosions. The hunters, the document said, alerted Yanomami from another settlement, who went to the village and found charred bodies.

Why You need A Business Entity | Elfad Blogs

When beginning or expanding an enterprise, a lot of owners wonder if they should type an enterprise entity and, if that?s the case, which one they really should use. There is certainly a wide assortment of data and ?pitches? being produced on the web concerning the advantages of certain entities versus others. When you reduce through the flak, however, the main cause for forming a company entity would be to generate protection from personal liability arising out of your enterprise activities.

It?s nicely established that as much as eighty percent of companies will fail in their initial two years. Several of those businesses, and most likely yours, carry a high level of private danger for their owners. In case you will not be utilizing the correct entity for your particular business, you will be personally liable if the company fails. Do you would like to expose your property, automobile and other assets? How concerning the assets owned by your spouse or their paycheck from a standard job? Deciding on the appropriate entity for the company prevents such nightmares from occurring. A lot more importantly, it is possible to sleep at evening being aware of that the worst factor that may come about is losing your investment inside the company, not your property.

Organization Structures

There are quite a few enterprise structure alternatives that exist inside the modern day corporate planet. Following is a short explanation in the most common company structures.

Corporations

Corporations come in two simple types, a ?C? corporation and an ?S? corporation. You can find many different differences, but the central 1 is a tax situation. Briefly place, ?C? corporations are taxed on their revenues and also you are then taxed separately on any money you take out in the corporation. An ?S? corporation passes through all taxes towards the shareholders together with the details becoming reported in your personal tax returns.

Regardless of the tax classification, a corporation is thought of an independent entity from a legal standpoint. This independent status acts as a shield amongst the activities of the enterprise and your private assets. As a practical example, Kmart lately filed bankruptcy. The individual shareholders had been not expected to file bankruptcy and lost absolutely nothing far more than their investment within the stock of the firm. Forming and employing a corporation for your business activities will have the identical impact, to wit, your personal assets will not be wiped out if the enterprise fails.

Restricted Liability Company

A limited liability firm, or ?LLC? because it is much better recognized, was a really common entity decision inside the early 1990s. LLCs are equivalent to corporations, but might be taxed as a partnership. In California, the LLC can have either a single owner or two. Irrespective of the quantity, these owners carry the legal title of ?member. The LLC provides a shield for the individual assets just like a corporation.

Partnerships

In my opinion, it truly is greater to possess died a tiny child then be within a partnership. Sadly, many organization owners type partnerships and don?t even know it. This occurs once they go into enterprise with one more person. If no organization entity is formed, the law considers the organization to become a partnership and treats it accordingly.

Partnerships are hazardous for one main cause: a partnership does not offer any protection from liability and, in many techniques, invites private liability. Under well-established law, most partnerships are classified as ?general?. This basically signifies that each of the partners are contributing to the administration and operating from the partnership business. This classification can have grisly outcomes.

Inside a general partnership, each and every partner is jointly liable for the debts of any other partner arising from the organization. As an example, you and your partner go to an enterprise dinner using a client. Your partner features a drink and then several more. They then get into an accident on the way home. Each and every with the partners is liable for the damages claimed by the injured folks. That means YOU! Even if you were not in the car, didn?t rent the automobile, never ever saw the vehicle and do not drink!

Partnerships are a recipe for disaster. Keep away from them whenever possible.

Limited Partnerships

Restricted Partnerships ["LP"] are maybe the most misunderstood enterprise entity. A limited partnership is similar to a common partnership, but enables a number of the partners to limit their liability by being limited partners. It?s critical to note that these limited partners are restricted to basically generating a capital [cash, content, equipment] contribution towards the partnership. They can not be involved in actively running the organization. If they are, they shed any protection from partnership debts. A lot of limited partnerships end disastrously. If you are married to the concept of pursuing a limited partnership, you need to do so in combination with corporations. That certain method is properly beyond the scope of this short article, but really feel free to make contact with me should you wish to pursue a restricted partnership.

Business owners must safeguard themselves by forming entities for their organization activities. The real concern is identifying the structure that is certainly finest for the particular scenario.
