Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet appears at UK supermarkets for ?99

Android Central

Unveiled to the world at CES, the Acer Iconia B1 is Acer's play at hitting the budget tablet space. While not offering bleeding edge specs, the B1 does offer a stock Jelly Bean experience on a 7 inch tablet, which, in the UK, goes for just £99. At CES we were told to expect launch in stores at the end of January, and true to their word that seems to be the case.

The Iconia B1 has been spotted already for sale by British supermarkets, ASDA and Sainsbury's, both at that magic £99 price point. Appealing to the casual consumer at a price point that is bordering on impulse buy could prove successful for Acer, especially over the traditional 'no-name' cheap tablets we've seen for so long at this kind of price. The Kindle Fire is a big supermarket tablet line in the UK, so it will be interesting to see how the Iconia B1 fares. It under cuts the cheapest Kindle Fire by £30 while offering a more traditional tablet experience.

Our hands on at CES showed a little lag, and a distinctly plasticky design, but also expandable memory and that Jelly Bean experience. But it all comes down to the price, and the Iconia B1 is the first tablet from a recognizable brand to hit that magic sub-£100 price point that makes it a compelling purchase for first time tablet buyers. If you've picked one up, or thinking of doing so, be sure to jump into the comments below and share your experience.

(AP) ? A retired barber accused of fatally shooting his California doctor in an exam room says he can't afford an attorney.

The Los Angeles Times reports Wednesday (http://lat.ms/Wyz1uf ) that an arraignment for the 75-year-old Stanwood Fred Elkus was pushed back so he could be assigned a public defender.

Elkus is charged with murder in the Monday afternoon attack that killed his urologist, Dr. Ronald Gilbert.

The 52-year-old doctor was shot multiple times in the upper body at his officer in the affluent city of Newport Beach in surburban Orange County and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors say Elkus had long suffered from prostate problems and was upset about his incontinence after a recent surgery.

It wasn't clear if Gilbert performed the surgery or how long he had treated him.

Android-powered Vertu Constellation Ti leaked all over, just needs a diamond-studded price tag (updated)

Androidpowered Vertu Ti RM828V

Shortly after the latest rumor that Vertu's prepping its first-ever Android-based device, eagle-eyed Blog of Mobile delivered further evidence to support the claim, and it even managed to dig out what it claims to be product shots of said phone. First of all, the name "Ti" and model number "RM-828V" are spotted across Bluetooth SIG, GLBenchmark and telecom regulator databases in Singapore and Macau. Having scanned through these pages we now know that the Ti will come with Android 4.0.4, an 800 x 480 display, a 1.5GHz processor, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Blog of Mobile added that it's a Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC with WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 radio, accompanied by a rather lame 1,250mAh battery. Bluetooth SIG's page provided the following design description of the device:

"VERTU Ti possesses the classic Vertu design DNA and characteristics - strong, unique & distinctive. The design and craftsmanship positions VERTU Ti alongside other iconic products in the luxury market."

If the above images are authentic then the Ti does indeed maintain the classic Vertu look. The only real changes we can see so far are the three new physical keys -- presumably "Back," "Home" and "Recent apps" for Android. If all goes well, we should see this wallet-busting gadget at MWC next month, so start saving up now.

Update: Russian retailer spblux.ru lists four variants of the Ti or, as the site calls it, the Constellation Ti: "Titanium Black PVD black leather," "Titanium Black Alligator," "Red Gold Mixed Metal" and "Titanium Black Leather." Interestingly, the red gold version has a search button instead of "Recent apps," but we guess that was an earlier design. Regardless, we have all four designs after the break for your viewing pleasure. [Thanks, Roman K.]

Pets help children deal with stress of military life ? Pets For Patriots ...

For military children, a family pet can help smooth some of the ups-and-downs that come with life in the armed forces.

In addition to providing unconditional love and companionship, a dog or cat can help strengthen the physical and emotional health of its owners, particularly children. Here are just a few ways Fido or Fluffy can be your child?s best friend, and so much more.?Boy and dog

Good for the body

Living with a pet can strengthen a child?s immune system. Studies show that children growing up in homes with a furred pet are at lower risk for allergies and asthma. A?study?by a University of Wisconsin-Madison pediatrician showed that infants in homes with pets have a lower incidence of pet allergies and eczema, an allergy-caused skin condition, than their pet-less peers. Finnish?researchers found that young children with dogs or cats suffered fewer ear conditions and were prescribed antibiotics less often than children who did not live with dogs or cats.

Dogs can also help ward off childhood obesity. Children with pets spend about 10 minutes more per day on physical activity than children without pets. While this amount of time might sound insignificant, the time over the course of a dog?s life or an entire childhood can add up. Moreover, while wearing activity monitors, dog-owning children in this same study engaged in more movements per minute than children without dogs.?girl and cat

Good for the mind

Dogs can motivate a child to read simply by being a silent, non-judgmental listener. Researchers at?Tufts University?s School of Veterinary Medicine found that second-graders who read aloud to a dog for 30 minutes a week during the summer showed a slight gain in their reading ability. The comparison group, second-graders who read aloud to humans for 30 minutes a week, did not show such a gain. And while there was no attrition in the group which read aloud to dogs, one-third of the comparison group dropped out of the summer reading program.

Good for the soul

Relocation is a fact of military life and may cause a child to feel socially isolated or lonely. A family pet can provide comfort, support and stability during this difficult time.?Research?has found that children with pets feel less anxious and apprehensive about relocating than children without pets. Many times, walking the dog or playing with the family pet outdoors can facilitate social introductions to others in a new neighborhood.

The family pet can also help provide a sense of security when one parent must deploy. Pets can serve as a coping mechanism and important attachment figures for children during a parent?s deployment.?Psychologists?have found that children in single-parent families feel more closely bonded to their pets than children with two parents present at all times.

Pets can provide life lessons as well. Children learn about birth, injury, illness and death, from the life cycle of a pet. In addition, kids develop a sense of responsibility by caring for a pet, and animals can connect children with nature and teach them to respect other living things.?Girl and dog

Finally, a family pet can help build a child?s character to weather the everyday stress of military life.

According to the?American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, ?[d]eveloping positive feelings about pets can contribute to a child?s self-esteem and self-confidence. Positive relationships with pets can aid in the development of trusting relationships with others. A good relationship with a pet can also help in developing non-verbal communication, compassion, and empathy? [P]ets can be safe recipients of secrets and private thoughts.?

Adopt, don?t shop, for your family pet

A family pet can serve as a child?s all-around best friend and so much more ? an immunity booster, personal trainer, reading coach, science teacher, confidante and therapist, among them. When your family is ready to add a four-legged member, adopt from your local shelter. You?ll be teaching your kids a lesson in life saving.

Do you know a child ready for his or her?BFF?(best furry friend)?

Farmers Insurance Open 2013 purse: Tiger Woods bags $1.098 ...

Tiger Woods gets to take home a sizable sum for his victory at Torrey Pines over the weekend.

Cruising into another victory at Torrey Pines, Tiger Woods will take home $1.098 million as the winner of the Farmers Insurance Open after finishing Monday at 14-under over four rounds. He's the only player to receive a seven-figure sum from the tournament's $6.1 million purse.

After finishing with respective scores of 69 in the final round and 10-under overall for the tournament, Brandt Snedeker, last year's tournament winner, and Josh Teater each receive $536,800. Both managed to tie for second-place in the field despite having one below-par round apiece.

Jimmy Walker and Nick Watney both had solid weekends of consistent play, finishing tied for fourth in the field at 9-under. The latter was below-par in all four rounds as they each receive $268,400 shares of the purse for their respective efforts.

For Robert Garrigus and Rickie Fowler, Monday is a good day after struggles in earlier rounds. Both golfers rebounded from rough stretches to finish 8-under, tying with Aaron Baddeley for sixth in the field. That trio receives $204,350 apiece from the purse.

10 Baby Toys You Can Make

Babies need entertainment ? lots and lots of it. Sure, you can run to a big box store and unload hundreds of dollars on toys, but if you?re reading this, I?m guessing you?re a savvy consumer who likes to save money.

These days, making your own baby toys is a bit of a rarity, but this time-old tradition has huge money saving potential.

Here are 10 toys you can make, many of which my own daughter has enjoyed.

Note: Some of these toys require a hot glue gun, which is incredibly cheap! Run out and pick up a single-heat setting model for about $3. Glue sticks will run you another few bucks. If you have any interest in making things yourself, a glue gun is a must.

Infant

Tracking stick:?Grab a popsicle stick or wooden spoon, construction paper, and your hot glue gun. Cut out a simple shape, like a triangle or star, from red or black paper. Babies respond to bold colors early on.

Affix paper to the stick or spoon. Wave it slowly in front of your child?s face to help their eyes learn to track items in tandem.

Note: This has not been proven as an effective way to hypnotize your child into a nap.

Baby

Glitter water:?Save an empty plastic water bottle from the recycling and collect any glitter, buttons, pennies, dice, fuzz balls, marbles, or other small tokens you have around the house. Stuff them into the water bottle and fill it two-thirds of the way.

Using hot glue or super glue, affix the cap so it won?t ever come off. Babies love to shake items that make noise and are attracted to the bright, moving shapes.

Silly spoons:?Open your kitchen drawer. Pull out a set of measuring spoons on a ring. Give to baby. Go take a shower. Hurry.

Pre-Toddler

Homemade drum:?Find an empty cardboard box, string, and two wooden spoons. Make two very small holes on opposite sides of the box using a metal skewer or sharp pointy item. Make the holes near the side that will be the top.

Cut two pieces of string each about eight inches long. Thread them through the holes and tie a knot on the inside of the box so when pulled, the string will not come free. Tape the box closed, and then tie a spoon to each piece of string.

Let the banging begin! (Earplugs not included.)

Peekaboo on a stick:?Gather a popsicle stick, your hot glue gun, and anything that could stand in for a mask. Cutouts from a magazine, flat Halloween decorations, old photos, paper you?ve drawn on, etc.

Trim the mask so it has smooth edges and resembles the shape of a face. Glue to the popsicle stick. In your most animated voice, chirp, ?Where?s baby? There she is!? Repeat as needed.

Bowl ?o fun:?Grab a large plastic or metal mixing bowl and fill it with miscellaneous items. The remote control, small toys, child-appropriate kitchen tools, plastic cups, a bouncy ball, stuffed animals, measuring cups, rattles?I could go on and on.

Place the bowl in front of the child, who will delight in unloading and inspecting each item. The trick is to make it a game to fill the bowl back up afterwards!

Toddler

Push toys:?To encourage your child to move about, give them toys that they can use for balance or that make fun noises when they pull them. Find a square box that stands about two-thirds of the height of your child. Fill it with a small blanket, old pillow, and just enough newspaper to give it some heft.

You want the box to be light enough that the child can move it, but heavy enough so it it won?t slide faster than she can push it. Once you find the right weight, tape the box shut. Decorate with bright colors and affix an interesting toy to the top of the box so the child is drawn to it.

Make sure to use a square box for stability. New walkers fall enough as it is.

Pull toys:?Keep an empty oatmeal cylinder or coffee can and make two holes ? one in the bottom of the can and one in the lid. Thread one piece of thick string that measures about two feet through both holes.

Tie a knot and feed the string through the container so the knot is on the inside of the container. Place a handful of coins, bells, or other items that make a loud sound when shaken, inside the container. Affix the lid with the hot glue gun.

Hand the string loop to your child and interact with them as they pull the toy around the room. By now, you should be a master at pretending to enjoy these kinds of toys.

School-Aged

Build-a-widget:?You?ll need colorful straws, paper cups, pipe cleaners, and a large knitting knife, or other item that can make small holes in paper cups. Make a few random holes in the paper cups to get the kiddos started. If they ask for more holes, make ?em!

You?ll be surprised how many different ways they insert the pipe cleaners and straws. What wonderful widgets!

Tinker toys:?For a more sturdy and complex version of Build-A-Widget, start saving empty toilet paper rolls.?With a hole punch, make two to five holes in each roll at different spots and heights.

Gather as many unsharpened pencils as you can. (Older children may be safe to build with pointy pencils.) Supervise as your child builds a fantastic structure.

Early menopause may occur in women with BRCA gene

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Women with harmful mutations in the BRCA gene, which put them at higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, tend to undergo menopause significantly sooner than other women, allowing them an even briefer reproductive window and possibly a higher risk of infertility, according to a study led by researchers at UC San Francisco.

Moreover, the study showed that carriers of the mutation who are heavy smokers enter menopause at an even earlier age than non-smoking women with the mutation.

While the authors note that further research is needed, given the size and demographics of the study, women with the abnormal gene mutation should consider earlier childbearing, and their doctors should encourage them to initiate fertility counseling along with other medical treatments, the scientists said.

The study will be published online in Cancer on January 29, 2013.

This is the first controlled study to explore the association between BRCA1 and BRCA 2 and the age at onset of menopause, the authors said.

"Our findings show that mutation of these genes has been linked to early menopause, which may lead to a higher incidence of infertility,'' said senior author Mitchell Rosen, MD, director of the UCSF Fertility Preservation Center and associate professor in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. "This can add to the significant psychological implications of being a BRCA1/2 carrier, and will likely have an impact on reproductive decision-making,'' Rosen said.

Mutations in either of the genes BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 can produce a hereditary, lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Some women decide to reduce their risk by undergoing prophylactic surgery to remove at-risk tissue, including their breasts and ovaries. The abnormal genes are the most identified inherited cause of breast cancer -- carriers are five times more likely to develop breast cancer than those without the mutations, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The new study was designed to determine whether women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have an earlier onset of menopause compared with unaffected women.

The researchers looked at nearly 400 female carriers of mutations in the BRCA gene in northern California and compared their onset of menopause to that of 765 women in the same geographic area without the mutation. Most of the women in the study were white because almost all of the BRCA1/2 carriers within the UCSF cancer risk registry are white.

The scientists found that women with the harmful mutation experienced menopause at a significantly younger age -- 50 years -- compared to age 53 for the other midlife women.

Heavy smokers (more than 20 cigarettes a day) with the abnormal gene had an even earlier onset of menopause -- 46 years. By comparison, only seven percent of white women in northern California had undergone menopause by that age, said the authors. Smoking has been shown to alter menstrual cycles and estrogen status, among other impacts.

The authors point out that while their study shows a possible increased risk of infertility for the mutation carriers, further study is needed. They also said that data regarding the age of natural menopause is limited because most women with the mutation are recommended to undergo risk-reducing surgery after they complete childbearing.

"Women with the mutation are faced with challenges in reproductive choices,'' said study co-author Lee-may Chen, MD, a professor in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services. "These data may help women understand that their childbearing years may be even more limited by earlier menopause, so that they can make decisions about their reproductive choices and cancer risk-reducing surgery.''

The first author of the study is Wayne T. Lin, MD, MPH, who at the time of the research was a resident at UCSF and is now a fellow at the Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Other authors include Marcelle Cedars, MD, a UCSF professor and director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services ; and Mary Beattie, MD, clinical professor in the UCSF Department of Medicine. Study data was collected from the Cancer Risk Program at UCSF and the northern California site of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, a project of the University of California Davis and Kaiser Permanente.

Funding for the study was provided by National Institutes of Health grants NR004061, AG012505, AG012535, AG012531, AG012539, AG012546, AG012553, AG012554, and AG012495. Support was also provided by the UCSF Cancer Risk Program Patient Registry, which is supported by the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation has grant support from the NIH, Department of Health and Human Services through the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health.

Arrests made in Brazil fire as funerals begin

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? Brazilian police say they've made three arrests and are seeking a fourth person in connection with a nightclub fire that killed more than 230 people.

Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said at a Monday press conference that the arrests are for investigative purposes. He says the detentions have five-day limits.

He declined to identify those arrested or the fourth person sought.

More than 230 people died early Sunday during the fire at a university party in southern Brazil. Police have said they think a band's pyrotechnics show ignited sound insulation on the ceiling, causing the blaze.

The Zero Hora newspaper quotes lawyer Jader Marques as saying his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, was arrested. The paper also says two band members were arrested.

Funerals began Monday in the city of Santa Maria, Brazil, where the blaze took place.

A fire that swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday and killed more than 230 people appears to be the deadliest in more a decade. Here is a look at some of the biggest nightclub fires in the past century:

? A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, broke out in December 2009, when an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches, killing 152.

? A December 2004 fire killed 194 people at an overcrowded working-class nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a flare ignited ceiling foam.

? A nightclub fire in the U.S. state of Rhode Island in 2003 killed 100 people after pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling.

?In China's worst nightclub disaster in recent years, a fire blamed on a welding accident tore through a disco in the central city of Luoyang in December 2000, killing 309 people.

?A fire at the Ozone Disco Pub in 1996 in Quezon City, Philippines, killed 162 people, many of them students celebrating the end of the school year.

?In 1977, 165 people perished and more than 200 were injured when the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, which touted itself as the Showplace of the Nation, burned to the ground.

?A fire killed 492 people at Boston's Cocoanut Grove club in 1942, the deadliest nightclub blaze in U.S. history. The fire led to the enactment of requirements for sprinkler systems and accessible exits with emergency lights not linked to the regular lighting system.

?In 1940, a fire ignited the decorative Spanish moss draping the ceiling of the Rhythm Night Club in Natchez, Mississippi, killing 209 people. Hundreds of patrons ran to the only exit. The windows had been boarded shut to keep unwanted guests from sneaking in.

German lawmakers give Britain's Cameron qualified backing on EU

BERLIN (Reuters) - Britain is right to demand greater openness in the European Union but cannot expect to be accorded special rights that might unravel the bloc, senior members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition were quoted on Sunday as saying.

British Prime Minister David Cameron triggered dismay in many European capitals last week with his call for radical reform of the EU and his promise of an "in-out" referendum on Britain's membership by the end of 2017, provided he wins a second term.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, is keen to keep a kindred advocate of free trade and open markets inside the EU and has been more measured in its criticism while making clear there are limits to how far it can go in accommodating British concerns.

"It would be entirely wrong to respond to Prime Minister Cameron's overture with a kneejerk rejection," said Alexander Dobrindt, general secretary of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Bavarian sister party of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU).

"Whoever condemns wholesale Cameron's idea for a national referendum on Europe fans distrust towards Europe, as if Europe must hide away from people," he told weekly Spiegel magazine.

Bavaria's Economy Minister Martin Zeil, of the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), junior partner in Merkel's coalition, also defended Cameron's speech, especially his call for measures to improve Europe's competitiveness.

Both the CSU and the FDP have become more critical of the European Union during the euro zone debt crisis amid concerns the currency area may turn into a 'transfer union' whereby richer countries such as Germany have to keep bailing out poorer neighbors.

But Dobrindt also signaled the limits of German patience.

"It is clear that in an optimal Europe there can be no place for special rights for individual countries," he said, adding that included Britain's cherished rebate negotiated in the 1980s that reduces its contribution to the EU's central budget.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle of the FDP said in an article for Die Welt newspaper there could be no far-reaching repatriation of EU competences to the national level as Cameron wants because it would wreck the single market.

"I fear that in so doing we would call up spirits which, like the sorcerer's apprentice in Goethe's poem, we would no longer be able to control," he wrote in an article which also endorsed British calls for more transparency in the EU.

Merkel, speaking in Chile during a summit of European and Latin American leaders, repeated her view that London and its European partners must seek a mutually acceptable compromise.

Merkel said she told Latin American leaders quizzing her about a possible British exit: "We, insofar as we represent here the whole EU, say quite unanimously that we wish Britain to stay in the EU."

(AP) ? French and Malian forces pushed toward the fabled desert town of Timbuktu on Sunday, as the two-week-long French mission gathered momentum against the Islamist extremists who have ruled the north for more than nine months.

So far the French forces have met little resistance, though it remains unclear what battles may await them farther north. The Malian military blocked dozens of international journalists from trying to travel toward Timbuktu.

Lt. Col. Diarran Kone, a spokesman for Mali's defense minister, declined to give details Sunday about the advance on Timbuktu citing the security of an ongoing operation.

Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, is in the capital, Bamako, and he told The Associated Press he had no information about the remote town, where phone lines have been cut for days.

A convoy of about 15 vehicles transporting international journalists also was blocked Sunday afternoon in Konna, some 186 miles (300 kilometers) south of Timbuktu.

The move on Timbuktu comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals under the grip of radical Islamists.

Meanwhile, French and African land forces also were making their way to Gao from neighboring Niger.

French and Malian forces were patrolling Gao Sunday afternoon searching for remnants of the Islamists and maintaining control of the bridge and airport, said Kone, the Mali military spokesman.

The French special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire in Gao from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed," the French military said in a statement on its website Saturday.

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao" the French ministry of defense said they brought back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to the Malian capital of Bamako far to the west.

However, a Gao official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said late Saturday that coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.

And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked Islamist fighters more than nine months ago along with the other northern provincial capitals of Kidal and Timbuktu.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said late Saturday that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Le Drian the United States will aid the French military with aerial refueling missions.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter vast areas of northern Mali, the size of Texas, that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. was already helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation. However, the U.S. government has said it cannot provide direct aid to the Malian military because the country's democratically elected president was overthrown in a coup last March.

The Malian forces, however, are now expected to get more help than initially promised from neighboring nations.

Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? a figure that does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the huge territory they hold.

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza. However, the Islamists still control much of the north, including the provincial capital of Kidal.

The Mali conflict will dominate the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Sunday and Monday.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the huge territory they hold.

The Mali conflict has been dominating the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which runs through Monday. On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met in the Ethiopian capital with Mali's interim president, Dioncounda Traore.

Ban "stressed the need to pursue a political process that would lead to a consensual roadmap for the transition to full constitutional order, in parallel with ongoing military operations," according to a U.N. statement.

Traore is heading a civilian transitional government that was set up following the coup last March. No date has been set yet for elections to choose a new government.

The GOP's Two (Completely Opposite) Comeback Plans

The Republican Party has two comeback plans after the 2012 election, and they are total opposites: Plan A is to win presidential elections by appealing to broader audience that reflects America's "changing demographics." Plan B is to just change the rules of presidential elections so that rural white voters get a disproportional vote.

RELATED: RNC Asks Justice Department to Investigate Obama Campaign Video

In a speech accepting a second term as Republican National Committee chairman on Friday, Reince Priebus will talk about appealing to new voters, The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny reports. "To those who have left the party, we want to earn your trust again," Priebus will say. "To those who have yet to join us, we welcome you, with open doors and open arms." At the RNC's winter meeting Thursday, GOP leaders were clear about who those people are. The RNC's Glenn McCall was even more explicit about who the GOP needs to target, telling? The Wall Street Journal, "There are large portions of the population?African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, young voters?who simply don't know us. We have to change that." McCall is not alone. "The demographic changes in America are real, and they are a wake-up call to the Republican Party," said Henry Barbour, the nephew of former RNC chair and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who decided against a 2012 presidential run?after spending months trying to explain his way around comments praising segregationists.? The younger Barbour is on the Growth and Opportunity Project, the RNC's five-member panel that's supposed to figure out a comeback plan.?

RELATED: Reince Priebus Is Right: The GOP Doesn't Have a Woman Problem

But the RNC must know that appealing to those groups will be difficult, and changing their minds could take a long time. In the meantime, Priebus is backing a plan that would massively dilute the voting power of the exact same people he says he'll greet with open arms.?Virginia's state legislature is working on apportioning its presidential election votes by congressional district, instead of giving them all to the candidate who wins the most votes statewide. With the old rules, President Obama won a majority of votes in the 2012 election, and therefore won all of Virginia's 13 electoral votes. With the proposed new rules, Mitt Romney would have won more than twice as many electoral votes as Obama -- nine to the president's four -- despite losing by almost 150,000 votes. This means the votes?of rural white people -- the GOP's current core voting bloc -- would be worth far more than the votes of people in cities and suburbs, the people?the GOP says it wants to peel off from Democrats.?

For all his talk about reaching out to voters "who have yet to join" the GOP, this is something Priebus is cheering on. Virginia's proposed rule change is something "a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at," Priebus told The Washington Post's Nia-Malika Henderson and Errin Haines. That would include Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

10 more China officials sacked in sex tape scandal

BEIJING (AP) ? A scandal involving Chinese city officials having sex with women hired by developers who secretly videotaped the trysts to extort construction deals broadened Friday with state media announcing that 10 more officials have been fired.

The first high-profile case broke in November when online video clips went viral of a 50-something official, Lei Zhengfu, in the throes of passion. Images of his jowly, pop-eyed face became targets of derision and disgust over government corruption.

Lei was fired as Communist Party chief of a district in the southwestern city of Chongqing. State media said Friday that 10 more district- and county-level officials in the city's government, party departments and state-owned enterprises who appeared in additional videos have been fired.

The involvement of officials from across various departments has exposed the intertwining of sex, money and politics and the often shady ties between real estate developers and local officials. The scandal hints at how widespread corruption is at various levels, said Liu Shanying, a politics researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

"The incident in Chongqing is not accidental or exceptional. It should be said that it is rather common and that the problem is with corrupted lifestyles," Liu said.

"The atmosphere of officialdom is far from the traditional morality of ordinary people. Many local officials have lower moral standards than ordinary people, and the power they enjoy makes it easier for them to do immoral things," Liu said.

The expanding scandal comes as China's newly installed leadership has vowed to crack down on rampant official corruption that threatens the party's legitimacy. Even as China's new Communist Party chief Xi Jinping has repeatedly pledged to strike hard against graft, authorities have been faced with a steady stream of bribery cases and other malfeasance.

In recent weeks, Chinese audiences have been riveted by revelations that some officials have amassed multiple properties using duplicate or fake identities. Soaring real estate prices have pushed home ownership out of reach for many Chinese, so such scandals are especially infuriating to the public.

Zhu Ruifeng, a former journalist who released the first sex tape in the scandal, said at the time that the woman, whose face is not visible in the video, was hired by a construction company to sleep with Lei in return for construction contracts. The company later tried to use the tape to extort more business from Lei.

An official at the Chongqing city propaganda office referred questions about the scandal to reports by the local party newspaper, the Chongqing Daily, which carried a report by the state-run Xinhua News agency.

Citing the city's anti-corruption committee, Xinhua described the developers behind the extortion as a "criminal ring" and said the company had "hired women to seduce local officials, covertly filmed their sexual acts and used the videos as tools of extortion."

Before You Sign for a High Risk Car Loan - Bad Credit Auto Loans

What credit challenged consumers can do to give themselves the best chance at successfully completing a subprime auto loan

What we know

Here at Auto Credit Express we believe that car buyers who have experienced credit problems in the past need to face the fact that they will likely need to make a number of difficult choices prior to signing on the dotted line. But the fact is that these choices can mean the difference between successfully completing their auto loans and further damaging their credit.

We don?t mention this topic lightly as it?s based on over two decades of experience helping car buyers with credit issues find those new car dealers that can offer them their best opportunities for approved car loans.

Auto loan troubles

In some cases the consumers we come into contact with have experienced issues with previous car loans that include signing a contracting they didn?t understand for a vehicle they couldn?t afford.

What we have learned from their experiences is that by understanding the process and following some simple guidelines, they could?ve avoided many of the situations they currently find themselves in now.

Credit reports and FICO scores

Even before you start the application process, you should know what?s contained in your credit reports (you?re entitled to one at no charge per year from each of the three credit bureaus) and at least one of your credit scores (you?ll have to pay for the score).

With established credit and FICO scores over 660 most buyers should qualify for a conventional car loan at prime or near prime interest rates with a captive finance company, bank or credit union.

Consumers with scores that fall below 660 will typically be looking at either a subprime auto loan or, in some cases if their credit is really bad, possibly even a loan through a buy here pay here car dealer (although this article won?t be covering BHPH car loans).

To sum it up, knowing your credit scores and the information contained in your credit reports is important for a couple of reasons:

??? ?The conventional and bad credit auto loan processes are different so you should know what to prepare for
??? ?Applying for a conventional car loan with poor credit scores will probably result in a credit denial ? wasting time for you, the lender and the car dealer (if you applied through a dealership that doesn?t have a special finance department)

Your budget

The next step is to determine a car budget. In addition to the car payment, you?ll want to include the cost of gas as well as full coverage car insurance. By comparing this figure to your income after expenses (for assistance you can use the loan calculators on sites such as ours) you can determine your debt to income (DTI) and payment to income (PTI) ratios. All lenders use these ratios but it?s especially important to those who lend to people with credit issues.

Do your research

Next, research those vehicles in the price range you budget for and you?re interested in by visiting web sites like consumerreports.org. This can help you determine which models are the most dependable to save you money in operating expenses.

Dealer backend products

Backend products are those offered in dealership finance departments. Of these, gap insurance makes sense if you have a loan term over 48 months and/or have put less than 20 percent down.

A reasonably-priced car service contract also makes sense if you?re buying a used car or financing a new vehicle beyond the new car warranty period. It?s also a good idea to check a model?s repair history (again, Consumer Reports is a good source for this) as well as price shop the cost of a service contract beforehand.

Buyers, however, should stay away from window etching, rust-proofing and paint protection. All three add little or nothing of value. If necessary you can etch windows and seal the paint yourself for a fraction of the cost, while most cars come with anywhere from a seven to ten year rust perforation warranty from the manufacturer.

Research the dealer

Check with friends, co-workers and the Better Business Bureau before visiting the dealer to determine its reputation for fairness in dealing with new and used car customers. Unfortunately, in many cases consumers with credit problems have a difficult time finding a franchised new car dealer willing to help them ? but more on that in a moment.

As we see it

Before submitting a loan application, know your credit scores and the information in your credit reports. If your credit is less than perfect you should also check your income and expenses to be sure you meet basic lender requirements.

Finally, if your credit is less than perfect, you probably have more options than you realize. Before visiting a tote the note dealer check out Auto Credit Express which matches applicants that have experienced auto credit issues with dealers that can offer them their best opportunities for car loan approvals.

So if you?re ready to establish your car credit, you can begin now by filling out our online car loans application.

Housing Market Lifts Home Improvement and Remodeling Industry ...

?

When the American housing bonanza came to a painful and sudden stop in 2008, the home remodeling industry in the United States lost more than 100,000 jobs in just a few months. Until early 2011, industry analysts expressed concern about the possibility of those jobs never coming back, but once median home prices stopped falling things began to look up. Now that home sales are beginning to pick up again, the phones of home remodeling contractors are once again ringing.

According to a recent report on NBC News, the home remodeling industry currently employs about 250,000 workers, down from a high of 327,000 in 2007. This is an industry that is dominated by independent contractors with modest payrolls. Skilled home improvement teams are typically small, but they often rely on temporary workers to help them get through more ambitious projects. Contractors interviewed by NBC News said that they are being cautious about hiring too many permanent employees; they would not like to go through the painful process of layoffs seen just a few years ago.

Home Improvement and Remodeling Demand

The Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry both expect that increased demand for home remodeling in 2013 will boost the overall economy. This demand will be motivated by different factors, starting with deal hunters who focus on dirt-cheap homes that have been neglected by the former tenants or the mortgage lenders that repossessed them through the foreclosure process.

Now that median home prices are steadily rising, homeowners are bound to be motivated to fix up their properties before putting up a ?For Sale? sign in their front yard. As consumer confidence and employment levels improve, mortgage lenders are more likely to extend cash-out refinance and home equity credit opportunities to qualified borrowers for home improvement purposes.

With housing inventories diminishing, even real estate investors may call upon home remodeling contractor to make their properties more appealing to potential buyers. In this sense, home shoppers are becoming more finicky when they are looking at properties. Many house hunters are now looking specifically for energy-efficient homes as well as extra features that will make them more attractive to future homeowners and thus easier to resell.

Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl & Cotton Bowl Previews ? Recreation and ...

Louisville vs Florida ? Sugar Bowl ? ESPN 1/2/2012

Mismatches seem to be the expected outcome of the BCS bowl games, with all five BCS games involving a point spread of more than 6 points. Las Vegas believes the biggest mismatch on paper is the Louisville-Florida Sugar Bowl, played on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The Gators are a 13-point favorite in the Louisville-Florida Sugar Bowl. ESPN ?will televise the Louisville-Florida game from New Orleans at 8:30 p.m. Eastern. And as always will have a crew at the Sugar Bowl to offer analysis and free college football picks on this matchup predicted by their experts

The Louisville-Florida Sugar Bowl should be an interesting match, as Louisville Coach Charlie Strong was previously the defensive coordinator at Florida. Also, even though the Cardinals are the underdog by 2 touchdowns, they?re the only conference champion in the game, as Louisville shared the Big East Conference title with Rutgers, Cincinnati, and Syracuse. Florida was dissapointed to not be in the SEC Championship Game, after tying for the SEC East Division title with Georgia.

Florida finished 11-1, with its only loss against Georgia, 17-9. In the regular season, Florida defeated then-#4 LSU, 14-6; then-#7 South Carolina, 44-11; then-#10 Florida State, 37-26; and current Top 10-ranked Texas A&M, 20-17. The Gators started the season 7-0, and they?ll carry a four-game win streak into the Louisville-Florida Sugar Bowl.

Louisville has a strong record, too, finishing 10-2. However, the Cardinals were 9-0 before upset losses against Syracuse and Connecticut.

Oregon vs Kansas State ? Fiesta Bowl ? ESPN 1/3/2012
