[By: A. Miller]

Our father, Rav Mordechai Michoel Miller z?l was born in 1943 in Boston to his parents, Rabbi Yeshaya and Mrs. Yehudis Miller. The spiritual climate in Boston in those years was in decline, and most of our father?s peers forsook a Torah life, with only a small minority even remaining Shomer Shabbos. At 18, recognizing the direction in which his peer?s lives? were heading, he firmly resolved that he does not want to lead such a life, but felt a strong desire to lead a Torahdike life. At the time, Rav Leib Heiman headed a mesivta in Boston and so our father approached him to arrange for chavrusas.

Two years later, at 20, he married his devoted wife, our chushuve Mommy, Rebbetzin Chana Miller sthichy?e. While our father was accepted into Harvard and could have entered the professions, setting aside time to learn Torah every day, and live a normal olam hazeh life, our parents did not want this; they wanted a life of only Torah. Togeth er, they chose to live in great poverty and dedicate themselves exclusively to Torah learning ? regardless of the difficulties, even holding their wedding in the yeshiva lunchroom instead of a normal wedding hall, so as to save money for living expenses after the chasunah. Thus began their life-long career of shunning materialism and devoting themselves solely to Torah.

Following their wedding they moved to New York where our father, upon the advice of his esteemed uncle, HoRav Avigdor Miller zt?l, went to learn by HoRav Yehudah Davis zt?l in Brighton Beach. He was the first, and for a while the only kollel member, but this did not disturb him and he learnt in the yeshiva with incredible hasmada for a few years until their money ran out. With no income, our parents sought a way to continue learning and contacted Rav Leib Heiman and asked if he would allow them to live in the yeshiva dormitory in exchange for tutoring bochurim. Rav Heiman was amazed to see a couple so devoted to Torah learning to the extent where they were even willing to live in a dormitory and immediately agreed. And so our parents with their young daughter moved into the Boston yeshiva?s dormitory, and our father, with his trademark intensity, learned in the yeshiva for a number of years. When the yeshiva closed, the family returned to New York where our father became a Magid Shiur in the mesivta of Kaminetz in Boro Park, where he taught for twenty-five years, and then, for the last twelve years of his life, served as an eighth-grade Rebbi at Yeshiva Tiferes Yisroel in Flatbush.

Our father strove to turn his hundreds of students into Torahdike talmidim. He had an enormous influence on scores of talmidim and truly concerned himself with their success ? even years after they left his class. He felt that a boy who was once his talmid is always his talmid. As Rabbi Yehudah Jacobson shlita, said, ?Rav Miller?s sense of achrayus was legendary. As an illustration, a talmid was unable to go to camp and so our father learnt with him throughout the summer ? without pay. And he did this for several consecutive summers. And this was not an isolated incident. This was not something that he did; it was who he was. By him, it was poshut that this is what you have to do. His attitude was always: ?He is my talmid; it is my achrayus to take care of him!? Our father did not teach a class of twenty-five boys, but rather twenty-five yechidim in a class. And he cared about each one individually. Our father did not teach gemara; he taught talmidim, and with his incredible depth of understanding, enjoyed great hatzlacha in helping them realize their potential.

Totty was an all-around lamdan and spoke with his talmidim not only in learning, but was also able to talk with the boys? about literature classics, scientific analysis, vocabulary literacy, mathematical theories and any and all subjects. His talmidim loved to see him; they basked in his trademark smile and felt his warmth and genuine caring. One talmid told the family that our fathers? smile was so warm and caring that he felt as if our father was hugging him. He created a close kesher with many talmidim who kept up with him, and were heard, even years later, quoting their mesivta Rebbi. They saw in him a true Torah personality and wanted to be close to him and be influenced by him.

Our father was an incredible masmid. Throughout the year, he would get up every day at 4AM to learn before Shacharis then go to yeshiva to teach, then immediately after yeshiva, to his afternoon seder, and then, after a quick supper, on to his night seder chavrusa. The gadlus of our father was that he kept to this schedule ? every day ? with absolutely and literally no exception. No matter what was occurring in his life, our father was up at 4AM the next day. During the summer, the family went to a bungalow colony within wa lking distance of Camp Morris. Every day, our father went to Camp Morris for shacharis and, immediately after davening, sat down and learned straight ? with deep intensity ? until 7PM, except for a few-minute break where he would eat an apple and a plain rice-cake?. On Shabbos, our father never took a nap. Immediately after the seuda, he would go to Lakewood Minyan and learn all afternoon until Mincha. And he did this every Shabbos ? without exception. We were brought up in a home, where our father had an acute awareness of what we are here for. Our father would frequently tell us: ?Life is short. I can?t waste it? And he literally lived his everyday-life in accordance with this recognition. Perhaps, a possible interpretation of ?Tzadik b?Emunoso Yichye? is that, while we all ?believe?, a Tzadik ensures that he consistently in fact lives his life, i.e. ?yichye?, in a manner which conforms to that which he believes, i.e. b?Emunoso?.

The family jokes that our father never came on time for davening. It?s true; he always came early. To him, on-time meant, at the very least, twenty-minutes before the scheduled time. We children often could not understand why he was rushing to, say, Mincha, when it was starting in thirty minutes and it was only a six-minute walk?.

The hallmark of our father?s personality was his midah of Emes. This midah permeated every facet of his life. Our father despised sheker and could neither tolerate nor relate to any behavior that was not entirely genuine. While Emes is typically understood as ?being honest with others?, and our father was renowned for his remarkable honesty, we refer here, primarily, to his extraordinary self-honesty. As an illustration, once, in his later years, his son-in-law, Rabbi Avrohom Goldberg, asked him why he does not wear a kapota, as by then he was a Rebbi for over 30 years and many of his contemporaries wore a kapota. His answer t ypifies his approach to his Avodas Hashem. He replied, ?You know, when I was a young man and for a short tekufa learned in the Matesdorfer Yeshiva kollel, the Rov asked me to grow a beard as the chasidishe bochurim in the yeshiva could not relate to a yungerman without a beard. So I grew a beard. And I felt that I lost fifty-percent of my drive to grow in learning since I already had a beard and felt like a choshuve person. If I were to wear a kapota, I would lose all my drive.?

Totty had no shtick. He was an absolutely real person and was only concerned about p?nemius. Once, when an old talmid met him and asked what he was involved with, our father answered, ?I am working on the sub-basement?. He meant that he was working on his inner self; his inner p?nemius. This is all that mattered to him. He gave no credence whatsoever to any and all externals.

Our father was not a man of means, yet he somehow managed to send substantial checks to nu merous talmidei chachomim in New York and Eretz Yisroel every month ? for over thirty years. How did he do this? Those that know the family well, know, that, our father was able to do this because he ? and our Mother shtichy?e ? literally did not need anything for themselves. They, by choice, lived b?dachkus gadol that it is hard to believe; we usually associate such a standard of living with the gedolei Eretz Yisroel. Whether it was two tiny rooms off the kitchen in the Mountaindale yeshiva, the dormitory in the Boston yeshiva, a basement, an attic, and finally when they bought their house, they always lived in such a plain simple manner. And they were joyful. They felt they had it all as they were leading such a full meaningful life. For himself, he needed nothing. Literally. For others, his generosity of spirit knew no bounds. Literally.

Our father lived with Hashem and often spoke about how Bitachon is a matter of experience ? not faith. He freque ntly related how Hashem has helped him and how if we only take the time to think, we can see Hashem?s hashgacha protis so clearly. When asked how he was doing, our father, with great exuberance, would invariably reply, ?Wonderful! What could be better? I am alive! And I am learning!?

Four years ago, on Shabbos Parshas Ki Sisa, the 18th of Adar, our father sat at the dining room table learning mesichta Tamid. He completed the mesichta and then got up to wash for Shalosh Seudos when he was suddenly niftar ? marking his siyum on his personal ?Mesichta Tamid? ? his lifelong perpetual non-stop Avodas Hashem.

An appreciation of our father is of course incomplete without speaking about his life-long helpmate, our Mommy shtichye, who, for nearly forty-six years, devoted herself with extraordinary single-mindedness solely to the cause of ?Totty learning?. There are no words, however, that are adequate to this task, so we will simply quote wha t our father himself so often told people: ?My wife makes me feel like a million dollars! All my Torah and ruchniyusdike growth is to her credit!? And he meant it. And, dearest Mommy, we, your children and grandchildren, know it?.

Our father used to tell us that we should daven not only for arichas shanim, but also for arichas yomim, meaningful days. Totty, you not only merited arichas yomim ? you personified it. May we, your children and grandchildren, be g?bentched with the sechel and wherewithal to follow in your ways so that we too, can be zoche to true arichas yomim ? meaningful days.

Diverse Destinations For A Tiger Safari

One of the most enduringly popular animals to feature on wildlife watching holidays, the Tiger is a strikingly beautiful creature that can be sighted in a wide range of locations. With the adaptability that has allowed them to thrive in a number of different habitats, they have spread out over the Asian continent during the course of their evolution. Today, they can be found in 13 of the worlds countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. The most famous of these, and the one with the most options when it comes to choosing a Tiger safari, is India, but there are several other destinations that are equally awe-inspiring and intriguing in their own right, both in terms of environment and culture.

India

As a country which has the Tiger for its national animal, and which has in many ways been a leading light in conservation campaigns, India needs little introduction as a destination for those who wish to observe these majestic creatures in the wild. The countrys national parks are generally considered to be the best places in the world to watch them in their natural habitat and there are plenty of these parks to choose from. One of the most popular is Bandhavgarh National Park, thanks to its large Tiger population, while Kanha National Park is also a good place for sightings, and has a diverse range of other wildlife, which never fails to impress visitors. The forests of India are teeming with life, from big cats to brilliant birds, making any Tiger safari a true treat for wildlife lovers.

Nepal

Although sightings are not as common in Nepal as they are in India, the countrys wild population is on the rise thanks to sustained conservation efforts, and it is possible to see them while exploring the forests of national parks such as Chitwan and Bardia. These parks have high biodiversity and support a number of other impressive animals as well, including the Indian Rhino, Sambar and Sloth Bear. With a somewhat different range of wildlife than that found in Indias Tiger safari destinations, Nepal is well worth exploring.

Bhutan

A jewel of a Himalayan kingdom is to be found in Bhutan. The animals in Bhutan are adapted for high altitudes and mountain climates, with individuals having been seen at up to 4,000 metres above sea level; indeed, Bhutans most famous mountain monastery is popularly known as the Tigers Nest after an ancient legend tells of the animals dwelling in a cave there although the big cats are not to be found in that particular area today. A very different country to most places where Tigers live, Bhutan is known for its unique and independent culture, as well as for its spectacular unspoilt wilderness. While sightings are less frequent here than elsewhere in the region, a visit to Bhutans forests can be a wonderful next stop after a Tiger safari in India, offering a chance to see different side of Asia, not to mention a stunning range of endemic flora and colourful fauna.

PSA: Kindle iOS app users should not update to version 3.6.1

PSA iOS Kindle users should not update to version 361

This one's coming straight from the horse's mouth. Amazon is acknowledging a "known issue" with version 3.6.1 of its Kindle app for iOS -- the company is recommending that current users avoid the latest update, which hit the App Store today. According to TUAW, the new version may completely erase a user's book library. How this passed the e-book giant's QA team is anyone's guess, but until a revision hits the cloud, we suggest you stay away.

Update: Amazon has reached out to clarify this issue. The update causes the app to "deregister," and as a result, items are removed from the smartphone or tablet. All of your content remains in the cloud, however, and can be re-downloaded after you re-register the device with Amazon. The update has been re-submitted to Apple and should appear soon. Consider us re-lieved. You'll find the official word below:

We have identified an issue with the app update that may cause your app to become deregistered. To register, enter your Amazon account e-mail address and password and all your Amazon content will be available in the cloud. We have submitted an update fix for this issue and are working with Apple to release.

Update 2: As of Wednesday afternoon, the app has been replaced with version 3.6.2, with listed improvements including "Fix for Registration Issue." The source link will now direct you to that latest version, which, presumably, won't make all your books disappear.

Senate clears the way for confirmation of Hagel

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, file)

(AP) ? The Senate cleared the way Tuesday for confirmation of Chuck Hagel to be the nation's next defense secretary after Republicans dropped their unprecedented delay of President Barack Obama's choice to head the Pentagon.

On a vote of 71-27, the Senate ended a Republican filibuster, setting the stage for the widely expected confirmation of the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska later in the day. Eighteen Republicans joined 51 Democrats and two independents to move forward with the contentious nomination.

If confirmed, Hagel would succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and join Obama's retooled national security team of Secretary of State John Kerry and CIA Director-designate John Brennan.

Hagel's nomination bitterly split the Senate, with Republicans turning on their former GOP colleague and Democrats standing by Obama's nominee.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asked what the filibuster had done for "my Republican colleagues."

"Twelve days later, nothing. Nothing has changed," the Nevada Democrat said on the Senate floor. "Sen. Hagel's exemplary record of service to his country remains untarnished."

Reid blamed partisanship over Obama's choice for the delay. Both Reid and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., warned that it was imperative to act just days before automatic, across-the-board budget cuts hit the Pentagon.

"The Pentagon needs a seasoned leader to implement those cuts," Reid said.

Republicans argued that while Hagel served with distinction in Vietnam ? Sen. Jim Inhofe called him a "hero" ? his record on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons disqualified him for the top Pentagon job. Last week, 15 Republican senators sent a letter to Obama asking him to withdraw the Hagel nomination.

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., cited Hagel's at-times halting testimony at his confirmation hearing and his misstatement that the U.S. has a policy of containment toward Iran rather than thwarting Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"He has an embarrassing lack of knowledge about our policy toward Iran," Coats said.

In the course of the rancorous, seven-week nomination fight, Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz and Inhofe, have insinuated that Hagel has a cozy relationship with Iran and received payments for speeches from extreme or radical groups. Those comments have drawn a rebuke from Democrats and some Republicans.

Levin dismissed the "unfair innuendoes" against Hagel and called him an "outstanding American patriot" whose background as an enlisted soldier would send a positive message to the nation's servicemen and women.

The president got no points with the GOP for tapping the former two-term senator. Republican lawmakers excoriated Hagel, calling him too critical of Israel and too compromising with Iran. They cast the Nebraskan as a radical far out of the mainstream.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., clashed with his onetime friend over his opposition to President George W. Bush's decision to send an extra 30,000 troops to Iraq in 2007 at a point when the war seemed in danger of being lost. Hagel, who voted to authorize military force in Iraq, later opposed the conflict, comparing it to Vietnam and arguing that it shifted the focus from Afghanistan.

McCain called Hagel unqualified for the Pentagon job even though he once described him as fit for a Cabinet post.

Republicans also challenged Hagel about a May 2012 study that he co-authored for the advocacy group Global Zero, which called for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons and the eventual elimination of all the world's nuclear arms.

The group argued that with the Cold War over, the United States could reduce its total nuclear arsenal to 900 without sacrificing security. Currently, the U.S. and Russia have about 5,000 warheads each, either deployed or in reserve. Both countries are on track to reduce their deployed strategic warheads to 1,550 by 2018, the number set in the New START treaty that the Senate ratified in December 2010.

In an echo of the 2012 presidential campaign, Hagel faced an onslaught of criticism by well-funded, Republican-leaning outside groups that labeled the former senator "anti-Israel" and pressured senators to oppose the nomination. The groups ran television and print ads criticizing Hagel.

Opponents were particularly incensed by Hagel's use of the term "Jewish lobby" to refer to pro-Israel groups. He apologized, saying he should have used another term and should not have said those groups have intimidated members of the Senate into favoring actions contrary to U.S. interests.

The nominee spent weeks reaching out to members of the Senate, meeting individually with lawmakers to address their concerns and seeking to reassure them about his policies.

Hagel's inconsistent performance during some eight hours of testimony at this confirmation hearing last month undercut his cause, but it wasn't a fatal blow.

On Feb. 12, a divided Senate Armed Services Committee approved the nomination on a party-line vote of 14-11.

Two days later, a Democratic move to vote on the nomination fell a few votes short as Republicans insisted they needed more time to consider the Hagel pick. The nomination also became entangled in Republican demands for more information about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya last September.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in that attack.

On the vote, two Democrats did not vote ? Mark Udall of Colorado and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

Hands-on with Tizen 2.0 on Samsung's developer handset (video)

Handson with Tizen 20 on Samsung's developer handset video

Shuffle along, shuffle along, because this couch is about to get crowded. Alongside the big four, we now have Ubuntu, Firefox OS and the latest version of Tizen all elbowing each other for room. Tizen has one particularly strong backer, Samsung, who built the reference device we play with in the video after the break, and whereas Firefox OS is destined only for the low-end, Tizen seems far more ambitious -- at least judging from the 720p resolution of this developer handset. Since the introduction of version 2.0, the OS is designed to run both native and HTML5 apps, or apps which mix the two layers -- such as the Vimeo app you'll see in the video, which has a web-based interface but accesses the hardware for the purpose of video acceleration.

Huge swathes of the interface are remarkable only by their familiarity: a home screen with a grid of apps; a single navigation button to take you back to this screen or alternatively to a multi-tasking screen by way of a long press; and a top-to-bottom pull-down for notifications and quick access to settings. It's basic, but it represents pretty much what all these new operating systems are supposed to be: ways of getting functionality that is at least close to Android but without all the licensing costs associated with running Google services. Beyond that, however, Tizen at least seems capable of delivering smartphone fundamentals like a fast camera (with burst mode, incidentally). Tizen's mostly likely rival will be Ubuntu, at least once that other Linux-based OS progresses beyond entry-level phones at some point in 2014. From the sound of it though, Tizen is about to beat it to the punch.

SEO is the best way to establish your business online. The higher your search rankings, the more traffic you will receive. Here are some tips to get started, and to improve your site?s ranking.

Blogging is a great way to add more keyword rich content to your site, and improve your search engine ranking. You will see an increase in traffic to your site.

Using free local listings to promote your business, as it is a great way to get your name out there. Free listings at these sites will generate more traffic and recognition for your site. The value of free advertising should never be overlooked.

TIP! It is extremely important to keep your content fresh and update it consistently. People won?t want to visit your website if you simply present the same old information indefinitely.

If you decide to hire a company to do your site?s search engine optimization, conduct plenty of research before hiring a solid SEO company. There are plenty of internet marketing ?experts? and SEO ?gurus? around who will happily charge huge fees for sub-par work. Look into past clients of these potential partners, read up on testimonials and vet their knowledge against what others say online. You will be thankful you did.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. Podcasting is a great audio or video medium to provide your customers with relevant and topical information. This format has become increasingly popular in modern times. Just be sure to properly tag your podcasts, so that they also get a good ranking in related searches.

Providing a site map is an important way to help search engines spider your website and increase your incoming traffic. This results in the pages being linked together. An easy to use site will get more traffic.

TIP! Include transcripts of any streaming media like audio or video on your site in order to help the search engines rank your content. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Create original content frequently, and publish it to your site. Set a goal for yourself, whether it be one story a week or one per day. Search engines take frequency of updating into account when they determine site rankings. Sites with a regular stream of new content garner higher page rankings.

It is important that links in your website and incoming links all include keyword phrases. ? as anchor text. Avoiding this will help ensure search engines see your links as relevant to your keywords, and then they will rank your site higher. Go through your website periodically to ensure that internal links are keyword links also.

Sharing a proxy with a site that is flagged or banned is not a good idea. If you unknowingly share a proxy with spammers and/or banned sites, it will have a negative impact on your search engine ratings, and you may have trouble getting good traffic.

TIP! Web analytics is a fantastic tool for tracking the impact that changes are having on your site and it should be in place before beginning any SEO. You should buy an analytics software and utilize it so you can tell what tactics work and what tactics are not working.

Site maps help search engines catalog your pages more effectively. A site map can help a search engine find pages on your site more easily. Site maps improve search engine results, regardless of the size of your website.

In order to generate more hits from search engines, try using longer or plural form of your keywords. Keyword stemming is a strategy that some search engines use. If you choose a keyword that has other possible endings, such as ?accountant,? the search engines might not include your site in results for the terms ?accounting? or ?accountants?. Use keyword stemming as an advantage over your competition. Use longer forms of your keyword as well as the main keyword.

TIP! Every page in your website needs to be easy to read. Adding interactive functions to your website, like allowing users to change the font to their preferred size, can help to build your online reputation.

Search engine spiders do not understand URLs in the same way people do. You want to remember this when you create your URLs. References to page numbers and sessions will only confuse the spider. Search engines spiders have a difficult time navigating dynamic URLs, and as a result, may not index your site correctly. The best way to avoid this problem is by converting dynamic web addresses to static URLs that include your main keyword instead.

Adding a site map to you site is vital to any SEO process. It makes it much easier for the search engine?s spiders to crawl through your website?s information. A huge site might require more than a single map. A good rule of thumb is to not have lots of links on each site map.

While these tips on SEO are useful now, remember that the algorithms for search engines are always changing. It is therefore important to stay up-to-date on the newest developments in search engine optimization. You have to keep applying new techniques to maintain your rank.

TIP! Search engine optimization, or SEO, can be viewed as a specialized type of marketing strategy. With search engine optimization, you tweak the content of your site to meet the desired criteria of popular search engines like Google or Yahoo.

NVIDIA details the T4i and Phoenix reference phone in latest video

NVIDIA knows we're all interested in the new Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i platform, and today they are throwing us a bit of a treat, video-style. Formerly known as Project Grey, the T4i is designed to deliver great performance in a smartphone, along with an integrated 4G LTE modem. To showcase this, they have built the Phoenix reference phone.

It's a complete package, sporting a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP camera with NVIDIA's "Chimera" tech 60 GeForce GPU cores, and the T4i with integrated LTE. Since this isn't something that is going to be widely available for most of us, having a look at it on video may be as close as we ever get.

Quantum algorithm breakthrough: Performs a true calculation for the first time

Feb. 24, 2013 ? An international research group led by scientists from the University of Bristol, UK, and the University of Queensland, Australia, has demonstrated a quantum algorithm that performs a true calculation for the first time. Quantum algorithms could one day enable the design of new materials, pharmaceuticals or clean energy devices.

The team implemented the 'phase estimation algorithm' -- a central quantum algorithm which achieves an exponential speedup over all classical algorithms. It lies at the heart of quantum computing and is a key sub-routine of many other important quantum algorithms, such as Shor's factoring algorithm and quantum simulations.

Dr Xiao-Qi Zhou, who led the project, said: "Before our experiment, there had been several demonstrations of quantum algorithms, however, none of them implemented the quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance. This is because in the previous demonstrations the quantum circuits were simplified to make it more experimentally feasible. However, this simplification of circuits required knowledge of the answer in advance. Unlike previous demonstrations, we built a full quantum circuit to implement the phase estimation algorithm without any simplification. We don't need to know the answer in advance and it is the first time the answer is truly calculated by a quantum circuit with a quantum algorithm."

Professor Jeremy O'Brien, director of the Centre for Quantum Photonics at the University of Bristol said: "Implementing a full quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance is an important step towards practical quantum computing. It paves the way for important applications, including quantum simulations and quantum metrology in the near term, and factoring in the long term."

The research is published in Nature Photonics.

ZTE Open, the company's first Firefox OS phone, gets a spec sheet at MWC

ZTE Open, the company's first Firefox OS phone, gets a full spec sheet at MWC

Remember that ZTE teased the MWC debut of its upcoming Firefox OS phone? Well, according to this spec sheet spotted by a tipster at ZTE's MWC booth, said device will be appropriately named ZTE Open, and it'll come with a moderate set of components: a Cortex-A5-based Qualcomm MSM7225A (which is known to clock at either 600MHz or 800MHz), a 3.5-inch HVGA TFT display with capacitive touchscreen, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 512MB NAND storage and the usual set of radios like WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (with EDR3), GPS and FM radio. Interestingly, there will be a 3.2-megapixel front-facing camera, but it appears that there'll be none on the back. The Open will be available in three SKUs with different UMTS bands: 850/1900, 850/2100 and 900/2100. As always, we'll be sharing the full announcement and hands-on once we see the phone at MWC, though we have a feeling that we've already played with it before.

Update: As some of you have pointed out, yes, the "FF" may actually mean "fixed focus" instead of "front-facing," and the former seems more likely.

EPA findings at toxic California Superfund site concern area residents

By Stephen Stock and David Paredes, NBCBayArea.com

Some residents who live around Moffett Federal Airfield near Mountain View, Calif., say they are scared. Others say they?re not worried at all.

Depending on whom you talk to, the Environmental Protection Agency?s findings of higher than expected levels of TCE in the air and in the groundwater near the Mountain View property is either a cause for big concern or no big deal.

But one thing is certain. Everyone is talking about the new test results from the EPA showing a presence of toxic chemicals in the air and in the groundwater in and around the Middlefield, Ellis, Whisman (or M-E-W) Superfund site.

According to the EPA, the underground Superfund site include a wide variety of toxic chemicals including PCE and vinyl chloride, chemicals left over from the budding semi-conductor industry that got its start in the buildings along Middlefield and Whisman Roads and Ellis Street.

The chemical of most concern and most quantity in the toxic underground plume is a chemical called trichloroethylene, known as TCE.?It's a cleaning solvent once commonly used by the military and the budding semi-conducting industry 30 years ago.

The EPA says that TCE is a toxic solvent that causes cancer in people and heart deformities in unborn babies. According to EPA experts the toxic plume has been lurking underground for decades ever since nascent semi-conductor companies apparently dumped or allowed TCE and other chemicals to leak into the ground.

According to EPA officials the United States military also used TCE to clean airplanes and vehicles during that same time period.

The plume extends from under the runway at Moffett Field a mile and a half south and west under Highway 101 and past Middlefield Road. To the north it goes to Whisman Road and south to just past Ellis Street.

The plume of mostly TCE is believed by EPA investigators to be about a half-mile wide at its widest point.

After NBC Bay Area?s Investigative Unit began asking questions in April 2012 about possible health effects of the TCE plumes, the Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC) opened its own probe.

After exhaustive research and analysis of three decades worth of health data, California?s state cancer registry announced that it found a higher than expected number of people living in neighborhood surrounding the M-E-W Superfund site who had contracted a group of cancers the registry?s scientists call non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The higher than expected incidence of these cancers occurred during the years 1996 to 2005.

NBC Bay Area

Now the EPA admits that until recently it had somehow missed some ?hot spots? of higher than acceptable levels of TCE in groundwater and in the air in several homes and more than 20 commercial buildings in the area. Two of the hotspots were found by EPA investigators along Evandale Avenue outside the original plume area.

That concerns some residents who live on that road. Residents like Theresa Larrieu, who has lived in a home along Evandale with her family for a quarter century. Larrieu said that the family always knew the M-E-W Superfund was nearby but figured it didn?t directly affect them since it wasn?t right next door. The Superfund site was far enough away, Larrieu thought, to be present but not an impact on her family?s health or life. Now, with these new EPA test results, the TCE plumes appears to actually be right next door and it may even be under Larrieu?s home. The EPA has conducted air, water and soil tests in and around the home but the results have not come back as of this writing.

Larrieu says she's worried and is holding her breath waiting on the results of those air and water sample tests the EPA took from her home. ?Scared. Nervous. Worried. Very worried,? Larrieu said when asked to describe her emotions. ?(There?s) way more suspense than I need in my life.?

?Your first thought is your health, is this affecting us is this affecting other neighbors that I know had health issues,? said Larrieu.

The EPA shares Larrieu?s concerns and M-E-W Superfund Site manager Alana Lee emphasizes they are working hard to address and clean up the mess. ?We cleaned up over 5 1/4 billion gallons of contaminated water and over 110,000 pounds of toxic contaminant,? said Lee.

But Lee also said that the EPA also missed these hot spots of TCE both in groundwater and in the air inside some buildings along Evandale Avenue including two homes outside the original plume area.

?The concentration (found there) is very high,? said Lee, ?A very high concentration.?

How high?

According to documents from test results, the highest TCE levels that the EPA measured in ground water in the area reached 130,000 parts per billion. The EPA considers anything over 5 parts per billion unsafe.

In the commercial buildings nearby, including two now occupied by Google, EPA tests found TCE in the air at levels 26 times higher than the level considered by the EPA to be acceptable and safe.

?Once we found these concentrations, which were a surprise, we took immediate action,? said Lee.

EPA

Bruce Panchal?s home is one of the two houses located on Evandale where the EPA found high levels of TCE. The companies responsible for the toxic chemical cleanup installed a series of four pipes in and around his home to ventilate the toxic TCE fumes leeching from the ground away from the house?s interior to the outside.

Even so Panchal said he?s not worried. ?They found a high concentration and with the system it pumps out all the fumes so it safe,? said Panchal.

Panchal and his family have lived in his home along Evandale for 45 years. He said he worked for the budding semi-conductor businesses that got their start in his neighborhood. He even said he handled the chemicals now in question and dumped them in the ground back then.

Despite the new contraptions now pumping air away from the inside of his house, he says he isn?t worried about his or his family?s health. ?I?m living proof that they have an issue with the fumes but it is not death defying or a detriment to your health,? said Panchal.

EPA officials said they also found high levels of TCE in more than twenty different commercial buildings between Whisman Road and Ellis Street. Included among those buildings are two new office complexes for Google employees where, the EPA says, renovations and construction allowed higher than expected levels of TCE to leech from the ground through the buildings? concrete slabs and into the air inside.

It is in some of these buildings where EPA investigators found levels of TCE vapors in the interior air that were as much as 26 times higher than acceptable safe levels with air conditioning systems off.

The EPA says it has systems in place in and around those buildings to keep vapors outside.

Google tells us they take this matter seriously and they?ve already taken measures to ensure that the buildings and the work area is safe.

Theresa Larrieu worries that it may be too late to keep her family from feeling the health effects of this toxic plume. She wonders how long they may have been exposed to these vapors and chemicals that went undetected until recently.

?It is scary,? said Larrieu. ?I?m very scared. I have children. I have grandchildren.?

Larrieu also remains concerned that not even the EPA can say how long the fumes have been leeching into the neighborhood or how long she and her family have unknowingly been exposed.

When we asked the EPA if they knew exactly how long have these newly discovered TCE hot spots had been there the EPA?s Superfund Site manager Alana Lee said, ?We don?t know.?

When we asked whether the toxic chemicals migrate underground or traveled down Evandale Avenue or whether those chemicals had been lurking there underground along with the rest of the toxic plume for decades, Lee had the same answer. ?We don?t know.?

The EPA said it will take decades more to clean up this toxic mess.

Comparing iPad weather apps at a glance

iPad weather app at a glance

18 iPad weather app current weather screens

Earlier in the week I compared the current weather screens of 27 popular iPhone weather apps, and in the spirit of equal time for expansive interfaces, here's the same thing for 18 popular iPad weather apps. The reason for the lower number is that not all of the iPhone apps had iPad versions -- Apple's own iOS weather app included! While some of the iPad versions are just bigger, others take advantage of the larger screen and broader aspect ratio to show not just bigger but more.

Like before, I used the exact same location and page, whenever possible, for each app. I paid for full versions of in-app purchases to disable ads when I could, and when it worked. If extended forecasts could be brought up on the same screen, I brought them up. I made them as comparable as possible.

Here they are, in order, from top left to bottom right, are:

The current weather screen isonly one aspect of a weather app, and doesn't cover features like radar, videos, etc. so as the title says, consider this only a glance at different design approaches. For more on the individual apps, check out our weather app review series.

That being said, which weather apps do you use, and are they the same ones that appeal to you most in the comparison above? Any of the weather screens attractive enough they encourage you check out an alternative app?

Pets re-create this year?s best films in ?The Pawscars? (VIDEO)

"The Pawscars," imagines this year's most acclaimed movies as seen through the eyes of pets (Pet Collective)

During each year?s Super Bowl broadcast pet lovers worldwide get the Puppy Bowl. So, why shouldn?t there be an equivalent for the Oscars? The Pet Collective has given us a hint of what such an event might be like with its new video ?The Pawscars.?

The video opens with this year?s Oscars' host ?Seth MacFarlane? lamenting that he has not seen any of the nominated films and wishing that his dog Bingo could tell him about the acclaimed movies.

Thus begins Bingo?s Pawscars dream sequence, which finds him and other animals playing out the roles made famous in films such as "Django Unchained," "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

The best part may well be a dog dressed in Lincoln?s famous top hat, reminiscing over the time he received a bone for a treat:

Masked gunmen kill seven members of Iraq militia

KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked gunmen wearing Iraqi army uniforms shot dead seven members of a government-backed militia on Friday in a northern town, in an apparent attempt to provoke unrest against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

No group claimed responsibility, but Sunni insurgents have increased their attacks over the past two months, a year after U.S. troops pulled out of the country, where Shi'ite, Sunni and ethnic Kurdish factions still struggle over how to share power.

Riding motorbikes, the gunmen dragged "Sahwa" fighters from their beds in a caravan and killed seven of them, seriously wounding an eighth near the town of Tuz Khurmato, 170 km (105 miles) north of Baghdad.

"The seven dead bodies were in the same place. Each had a deadly shot to the head, but the eighth one had several shots in the back," said a policeman at the scene who declined to be named.

The Sahwa or "Sons of Iraq" are former Sunni insurgents who rebelled against al Qaeda in the Sunni heartland province of Anbar at the height of the Iraq war and helped American troops turn the tide of the conflict.

Al Qaeda's affiliate, Islamic State of Iraq, has often targeted Sahwa, pledging to take back ground lost to American and U.S. forces.

The prime minister has been struggling to quell mass protests by Sunni Muslims, mainly in Anbar, against what they see as the marginalization of their sect since the fall of Saddam Hussein and the rise of Iraq's Shi'ite majority through the ballot box.

The attack was at least the second of its kind so far this month. Earlier in February a suicide bomber targeting Sahwa fighters collecting their salaries killed at least 22 people.

While violence has fallen from the height of the sectarian slaughter that killed tens of thousands in 2006-2007, insurgents have carried out at least one major attack a month since U.S. forces left in December 2011. Bombings and killings still happen daily, often aimed at Shi'ite areas and local security forces.

Sunni unrest and renewed violence are compounding fears the war in neighboring Syria - where Sunni rebels are battling President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Shi'ite Iran - could undermine Iraq's own delicate sectarian and ethnic balance.

Tuz Khurmato, where Friday's shootings took place, is located in the "disputed areas" - a thick band of territory over which both the Iraqi central government and the autonomous Kurdish region in the north claim jurisdiction.

Today's early morning blast,?centered on the Chelyabinsk region, sent massive tremors through the ground, which were recorded on seismic monitoring instruments around the world.

Initial reports pegged the explosion as similar to a magnitude 2.7 shaker, according a seismograph released by the USGS. For comparison, the 1908 Tunguska meteor blast's shock waves, which flattened 80 million trees in Siberia, produced the equivalent of an estimated 5.0 temblor.

"When you have an explosion in the air, it shakes the ground, and we see it on the seismographs," explained Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, Colo., which reported the meteor-related tremors. "It's not an earthquake, and it looks very different from the usual earthquake seismogram," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Few?meteor explosions?have actually been recorded on seismographs, though, Caruso said. "We've been looking at it all morning," he added.

The meteor reportedly injured hundreds of people and damaged hundreds of buildings when it exploded in a massive blast Friday morning (Feb. 15).

Most of the injured were reportedly hurt by falling glass caused by the blast, and many have been hospitalized. In addition, an estimated 297 buildings suffered damage, including six hospitals and 12 schools, according to translations of updates by the Russian Emergency Ministry.

Scientists think a meteoroid entered the atmosphere above Russia's southern Chelyabinsk region, where it exploded and broke up into fragments scattered across three regions of Russia and Kazakhstan, according to news reports. [Photos of Russia's Meteor Fireball Blast]

The Russian meteor probably?had nothing to do with the upcoming close Earth approach of asteroid 2013 DA14, which is due to make its closest approach to the Earth at 2:24 p.m. ET, Don Yeomans, head of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program, told SPACE.com. The Russian meteor's trail did not travel south to north as the asteroid will.
